Structural engineering

ANS Geo's structural division has extensive experience in all phases of structural engineering and provides comprehensive structural design and analysis for a wide variety of applications and industries.

From project conception through completion, ANS Geo employs practical and efficient structural engineering solutions to meet client’s specific needs and project requirements.

Our structural team members are highly knowledgeable in various national and local building codes, design manuals, standards, and industry-specific analysis tools and software.

ANS Geo’s structural engineering division can provide the following services for both public and private clients:

Structural design and preparation of construction documents

  • Provide structural engineering design and analysis for a variety of above and below grade structures across multiple engineering sectors including water, wastewater, commercial/residential structures, environmental facilities, and the energy sector.

  • Analyze the project site and location to prepare site-specific design loading calculations for wind, snow, and seismic loading in accordance with ASCE7, IBC and/or AASHTO requirements.

  • Provide structural engineering design utilizing concrete, steel, FRP, aluminum, stainless steel, and masonry.

  • Perform structural designs using industry-specific structural analysis software and in accordance with the appropriate national and local building codes, design manuals and guidelines such as AASHTO, ACI, ADM, AISC, ASCE, ASTM, IBC, NDS, OSHA, PCA & TMS.

  • See the Renewables Engineering Section here for additional details regarding the structural engineering design to support the construction of power-generating facilities, including solar, wind, battery storage, and natural gas developments.

  • Prepare construction documents such as drawings utilizing AutoCAD or Revit, and structural-specific project specifications including Division 3 (Concrete), Division 4 (Masonry), and Division 5 (Metals).

  • Prepare engineering cost estimates based on the cost estimating software and local project histories from relevant ANS Geo projects.

Foundation design and corrosion evaluations

  • Review available in-house, third-party, and historical geotechnical data, including soil boring logs, lab testing results, and resistivity data to understand and evaluate the impact on the structural design of various subsurface foundation elements.

  • Perform structural analysis and evaluations for deep and shallow foundations to support various infrastructure, equipment, buildings, and bridge structures.

    • Deep foundation designs may consist of driven or drilled foundations including piers, caissons, friction and/or end-bearing piles such as timber piles, steel pipe or H-piles, micro piles, or helical piles.

    • Shallow foundation designs may consist of reinforced cast-in-place or precast concrete isolated spread footings, strip footings, combined footings, or mat foundations.

Residential/ Commercial buildings

  • Design of roof trusses, shear wall, studs, columns, beams, joists, footings, moment frames, braced frames, connections and nearly all types of structural members that are required to construct a residential or commercial building.

  • Provide cost effective recommendations regarding the roof/floor framing system, member properties, shear wall nailing patterns, bearing walls, etc.

Structural assessments

  • Perform structural condition assessments/inspections of new and existing facilities, including evaluations using non-destructive and destructive testing techniques.

  • Perform site inspection to evaluate residential and commercial building structural members such as floor beams, joists, roof joists, trusses, columns, walls, etc.

  • Evaluate live load capacity of residential/commercial buildings based on site observations, structural drawings, and design calculations.

  • Provide technical analysis on building damage by performing site evaluation, design calculations, and develop structural repair recommendations.

  • Prefabricated structures.

Prefabricated structures

  • Coordinate with the prefabricated bridge and/or building manufacturers regarding specifications, project-specific design loading criteria, assembly and layout, configurations, and design reaction loads.

  • Provide deep and/or shallow foundation design based on information provided by the steel building manufacturer including base plate layout and details, column reaction forces, gravity, and lateral loads.

  • Produce structural engineering drawings, specifications, general notes, and details for the building or bridge foundation system.

Third-party evaluation and recommendations for structural design and drawings

  • Provide third-party evaluation on structural engineering drawings and/or calculation reports for a variety of structure types and industries.

  • Provide recommendations on applicability of cost-effective designs based on the documents provided such as drawings, calculations report, design considerations, etc.

Project Management & Coordination

  • Interdisciplinary project coordination with the engineering design team including architects, geotechnical engineers, civil/site engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, environmental engineers, and landscape architects.

  • Maintain consistent communication with all project stakeholders (project owners, developers, contractors, subcontractors, manufacturers/vendors etc.) to discuss structural-related design and/or construction matters throughout all phases of the project.

Construction administration services

  • Perform construction inspection/oversight and maintain logs of complete daily progress reports for construction work observed.

  • Conduct on-site inspections and documenting existing conditions, photographing, and creation of hand sketches to observe work in progress.

  • Monitor the contractor’s work to ensure that the procedures and materials used conform to the project contract drawings and specifications.

  • Review and process bid documents, change orders, RFI’s, shop drawings, construction documents, etc.
